What is galvanised mild steel and what is it used for?

As leading UK metal suppliers, we always hold large stocks of steel in a wide range of sizes and finishes and all profiles types.

metals4U are stockists of BSEN 10305, DX51, S235, and S275JR grades of galvanised mild steel products- grades are dependant on which profile you order- if you need a particular grade you can search the profile range by filtering for the specific grade you need.

Galvanised mild steel has an attractive 'spangle' surface finish that is the result of the hot dip galvanising process.

If you are new to using galvanised mild steel, we would recommend you read our in-depth guide to mild steel, there is a section dedicated to the properties, usage, and safety considerations when using these products.

What is galvanising?

Galvanising is a process that involves coating steel with a protective layer of zinc to prevent rust and corrosion. This zinc layer acts as a barrier, shielding the steel from moisture and other environmental factors that cause corrosion. Due to its enhanced durability and longevity, galvanised steel is widely used in construction, outdoor structures, and various industrial applications.

The galvanising process

The galvanising process typically involves several steps to ensure the steel is thoroughly protected:

  • Surface Preparation - The steel is thoroughly cleaned to remove impurities, oils, and rust that might interfere with the galvanising process.
  • Pickling - The steel is dipped in an acidic solution to remove any further oxidation, ensuring a clean surface for the zinc coating to adhere to.
  • Fluxing - To prevent oxidation before the steel enters the galvanising bath it is coated in a flux solution
  • Galvanising Bath - The steel is then submerged in a bath of molten zinc which bonds to the steel at a molecular level.
  • Cooling and Inspection - The steel is cooled, inspected, and tested for coating quality and thickness after galvanising.

Galvanised Steel Advantages

Galvanised steel offers several advantages over non-galvanised steel, making it a preferred choice for many applications. The zinc coating provides robust corrosion resistance, meaning galvanised steel requires minimal maintenance and has a long lifespan, even in harsh environments. Compared to other types of steel, galvanised steel is cost-effective, durable, and highly reliable in preventing rust, reducing the need for frequent replacements. This makes it ideal for outdoor, marine, and industrial use.
