What are antiquing products and what are they used for?

Due to the increasing popularity of antique materials. We have added a number of quality antiquing products to our already extensive range of finishing products.

We offer several different types of Antiquing fluid including black, bronze, brown and old English Brass. This is to ensure we can offer a colour to match your needs or existing environment. We also supply these in a range of sizes so that we can cater for both one-off projects and the trade.

There are three steps to this process. First you must remove all dirt, fingerprints and other elements to allow the antiquing fluid to work. Our pre-treatment option is an acidic degreasing solution that comprehensively cleans and degreases the brass. This should be all you need to prepare the metal for the application of the antiquing fluid. This pre-treatment is suitable for all ferrous and non-ferrous metals. It is also an ideal way of preparing material that you wish to polish.

The second part is the application of the fluid itself. After diluting the fluid with water, there are two methods you can use to apply it. The first is directly onto your material using a brush, cotton wool or other tool. The second is to immerse the material in the solution until you have achieved the required colour change.

Finally you must protect the finished item to reduce tarnishing. This is done using Jade oil, which dries the material and deposits a thin protective layer on the material. This would be achieved by application directly onto your product. This is a basic guide to give you an idea of the process and we would always recommend following the instructions supplied with the product.
