What is an Aluminium I Beam?
An I beam is a length of metal formed in the shape of a capital I. The other way of looking at it is a capital H on its side. A central vertical support sits between two horizontal flange sections, to form a piece of rigid metal that is most commonly used in structural applications. Being made from aluminium makes them lighter and more resistant to corrosion than traditional mild steel I beams, or universal beams.
Our aluminium I beams are made from 6082 T6 grade aluminium. Grade 6082 is a medium strength aluminium that possesses excellent corrosion resistance. Grade 6082 is commonly known as a structural alloy and provides the highest strength of all the alloys in the 6000 series. This increase in strength is due the addition of a large quantity of manganese that controls the grain structure and creates a stronger alloy.They are also known as aluminium beams, and structural aluminium I beams.
What are aluminium I beams used for?
Aluminium I beams are used where weight and resistance to corrosion are important. In this respect they outperform their mild steel counterparts. They are commonly used for structural and highly stressed applications, such as bridges, cranes, truck construction and other heavy machinery. They are also used in building homes where structural support is required. Their structure makes them very strong, able to stand heavy loads without bending.

These sizes correspond to the height of the vertical x width of the horizontal flanges x thickness of vertical x thickness of horizontal flanges. These can be custom cut to the length you specify.
