Our stainless-steel wire, sometimes known as metal rope, is available in 1.2mm and 3mm diameter presentations.
Our 1.2mm diameter wire is manufactured from 304 grade steel, which has good corrosion resistance and excellent weldability properties. This product is available in 1 kg, 10 kg, and 20 kg coils.
Our 3mm diameter wire is manufactured from 316 grade steel and is available in 10m, 50m, and 100m coiled lengths. 316 grade stainless steel wire has excellent weldability and corrosion resistance properties.
What is stainless steel wire, and what is it used for?
Stainless steel wire or metal rope is soft and malleable and can be bent, twisted, and tied with appropriate hand tools, which makes it suitable for various applications such as connecting rebars and mesh, fixing insulation in place, crafts, art, floristry, jewellery making, and a range of garden projects.
How strong is 2 mm stainless steel wire?
2 mm stainless steel wire provides an excellent mix of strength and flexibility. The amount of weight it can support will vary depending on the grade of steel, such as 304 or 316, along with its tensile strength and the how it is being used — whether under tension, bent, or tied. In many general applications, such as tying, support stays, light structural use, or mechanical assemblies, it will perform reliably. For high-stress or safety-critical tasks, you should verify the wire's certified tensile rating or consider using multiple strands in parallel.
Is stainless steel wire rustproof?
Stainless steel wire is highly corrosion-resistant—its protective layer of chromium oxide helps prevent rust. However, "rust proof" is somewhat misleading; under extreme or aggressive conditions (such as salt spray, industrial chemicals, or chlorine exposure), even stainless steel can develop surface discolouration or localised pitting. Choosing a more robust grade (e.g., 316) and performing periodic cleaning will help maintain its appearance and corrosion resistance over time.
Can you cut stainless steel wire?
Yes — stainless steel wire can be cut, but the method depends on the wire's diameter and hardness. For thinner wires (up to a few millimetres), high-quality wire cutters or cable cutters will usually suffice. Thicker or hardened wire may require stronger cutting tools such as bolt cutters, a cold saw, or an abrasive wheel. It is essential to wear protective equipment, such as gloves and safety goggles, and to secure the wire firmly in place to prevent movement or bending while cutting.
