What is copper and what is it used for?
Copper is a pure metal requiring no extraction from an ore. It was the first metal to be cast into shape in a mould around 5000 BCE. It is also a component of various alloys such as brass and bronze and is often added in smaller quantities to aluminium alloys and Corten steel.
Copper is particularly malleable and ductile and a good conductor of both heat and electricity. It has good corrosion resistance and can be easily hard and soft soldered. Copper is well suited to a wide range of applications such as electric cabling, pipes, electronics, wiring, circuit boards, roofing, fermentation vessels and architectural features. When left un-lacquered and exposed to various atmospheric conditions, its oxidisation forms a very distinctive green Verdigris or patina.
