
What is S275 steel?
S275 steel is a low-carbon, non-alloy structural steel commonly used in construction and engineering applications. As part of the EN 10025 standard, it offers a good balance of strength, machinability, and affordability, making it suitable for a wide range of structural projects. S275 is a structural steel grade commonly used in load-bearing parts like columns, beams, and frameworks. Its reliability and wide availability make it a go-to material for engineers and fabricators working on everyday construction projects.
Chemical composition and mechanical properties of S275 steel
S275 steel generally contains a maximum of 0.25% carbon, along with manganese, sulphur, and phosphorus. It's low carbon content improves weldability and reduces brittleness, while the presence of manganese contributes to its strength.
Mechanically, S275 steel has a minimum yield strength of 275 MPa, which is where the material derives its name. The tensile strength of S275 typically ranges from 410 to 560 MPa, varying with the material's thickness and shape. This balance of strength and affordability makes it a solid choice for load-bearing work where premium-grade steels are not essential.
For projects that demand greater protection against corrosion, galvanised steel is often preferred. For applications requiring greater strength or resistance to chemicals, stainless steel may be a more suitable choice.
Common applications of S275 steel
S275 steel used across the construction industry for projects such as steel frameworks, bridge components, and structural sections. One of the most common variants is S275JR, which includes a specified minimum impact resistance at 20°C, making it particularly suitable for applications exposed to sudden forces or changing temperatures.
While standard S275 is sufficient for many everyday structural applications, S275JR offers additional assurance where durability and performance under dynamic loads are required.  S275 vs S355: comparing structural steels
The key difference between S275 and S355 is their yield strength. S275 has a minimum yield strength of 275 MPa, while S355 has a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa. This added strength makes S355 better suited to more demanding structural applications where higher performance is required. The increased strength of S355 allows designers to use thinner or more compact sections while still meeting structural requirements. This can help reduce overall weight and decrease material usage in larger builds.
That said, the higher strength grades demand a higher price and can make welding slightly more complex. For many general applications, S275 remains a practical and budget-friendly choice. At the same time, S355 is chosen when strength is critical, such as in high-rise buildings, heavy infrastructure, or where structural efficiency is a priority. For day-to-day fabrication work, mild steel, such as S275, continues to be a reliable and adaptable option.
 Fabrication and welding considerations for S275 steel
One of the advantages of S275 steel is how straightforward it is to work with. Thanks to its low carbon content, it can be easily cut, drilled, or shaped and typically does not require preheating before welding. This makes it a popular choice for both workshops and on-site jobs.
For best results, standard welding methods such as MIG, TIG, or MMA can be used, depending on the application and thickness. Because S275 is a general-purpose steel, it responds well to standard workshop processes, making it a favourite among engineers, fabricators, and DIY enthusiasts alike.
