

Richard Stewart - Reinforced Wooden Garden Planters with Steel and Galvanised Supports
Our customers never fail to amaze us with their creativity and engineering skills. One of our talented customers recently shared their detailed build for a durable garden structure, featuring reinforced wooden planters, steel supports, and clever drainage solutions.
Building a Strong Foundation
The structure was built on a made-up clay plinth to level a sloping field. The flooring consists of shingles held in a hexagonal mesh grid over a compacted MOT1 and rubble base, providing both stability and excellent drainage. The fixed planters are carefully designed to pierce the clay base, allowing water to drain naturally without damaging the structure.
Reinforced Wooden Frames
The framework is crafted from treated timber with reinforced plywood. All joints were screwed, glued, and bolted, ensuring maximum durability and long-lasting strength against the elements.
Steel and Galvanised Tube Supports
For additional stability, 8 CorTen 3mm mild steel foot plates were bolted to concrete pads, firmly securing the structure to the ground. The build is further braced with a 26.9mm OD galvanised tube, attached to the frame using bolted 169 swivel wall fixings. This combination of timber, steel, and galvanised supports creates a robust, weather-resistant garden installation.
The Final Result
The result is a beautifully engineered garden structure that balances aesthetics, functionality, and strength. With drainage considered, a level base on a slope, and reinforced joints, this build is both practical and visually striking.
