From Clay to Creation: Handmade Ceramic Flowers with Steel Stems
At metals4U, we love seeing how our materials inspire creativity, and this project from one of our customers is a beautiful example of craftsmanship that bridges generations and materials.
A passionate potter and ceramicist, our customer has been working with stoneware clay for over 17 years, ever since retiring from a career as a gas mechanical maintenance pipeline engineer. His journey from engineering to pottery reflects a perfect balance between precision, patience, and artistry.
A Blooming Idea with a Family Touch
The inspiration for this project came from a simple yet heartwarming moment shared with his 10-year-old granddaughter. Together, they decided to create something new: ceramic flowers. Using a handmade petal-shaped former, they carefully cut and arranged the clay pieces to form a delicate poppy. Each layer was joined with slip before being fired in the kiln at 1000°C to create the bisque base.
Once cooled, the flowers were glazed and fired again to 1200°C, transforming them into vibrant, lifelike ceramic blooms. But the project did not stop there; the challenge was how to display them beautifully and securely.
The Strength Behind the Beauty
That is where metals4U came in. Using a 3mm mild steel rod, the artist crafted sturdy stems for the flowers, fixing each ceramic poppy in place with dome tap washers at the top and bottom. The result? A stunning, realistic flower that perfectly balances the fragility of clay with the durability of steel.
A Lifelong Passion for Pottery
Although his early work focused on domestic ware, such as handcrafted storage jars and kitchenware, his true passion lies in Raku pottery, particularly the Copper Matt Raku and Naked Raku techniques. These styles produce unpredictable, mesmerising metallic finishes that make every piece truly one of a kind.
An Inspiring Mix of Art and Engineering
This project is a wonderful reminder that creativity can flourish at any stage of life, and that sometimes the most meaningful creations come from shared moments and a willingness to experiment.
We are proud that our materials, such as mild steel rods, can play a small part in helping this talented potter bring his floral vision to life.
