Building a Custom Kitchen Table with Tapered Mild Steel Legs
When our customer needed a dining table strong enough to support a solid ash top, they decided to go the DIY route, creating a table base that combines industrial strength, modern design, and a perfect fit for their space.
Using 100mm box section mild steel from metals4U, they fabricated bespoke tapered legs that not only provide exceptional strength but also add a bold, elegant look. Here’s how they did it:
Step 1: Choosing the right material
The table required legs that could support significant weight without flexing. 100mm box section mild steel was the ideal choice, rigid, durable, and easy to weld. The material was ordered to exact lengths from metals4U, arriving millimetre perfect and ready for fabrication.
Step 2: Cutting the taper
To achieve the tapered leg profile:
- A ‘V’ cut was made along one complete side of each length of box section.
- This cut allowed the steel to be closed up slightly, creating a narrowing profile toward the base.
- The sections were held in a jig within a vice to ensure accuracy and symmetry.
Step 3: Welding the legs
- Once aligned, the open seam was carefully MIG welded along its entire length.
- The welds were cleaned up using a flap disc, keeping a seamless look while maintaining structural strength.
Step 4: Finishing the steel
Rather than painting or powder‑coating, the customer chose to retain the black millscale finish, giving the table base an authentic, raw‑steel look. A light application of clear wax or lacquer can help protect this finish from rust while maintaining its industrial character.
Step 5: Adding the solid ash top
With the legs fabricated, they were drilled and fitted to timber cross‑members before being attached to the solid ash tabletop. The black steel perfectly echoed the black, tapered chair ledge in the kitchen, creating a cohesive design.
The finished table
The result is a custom‑built centrepiece that’s both functional and stylish, showcasing how metals4U steel can help turn an idea into reality. The table’s clean lines, tapered profile, and rugged finish prove that with the right materials, even complex designs are achievable at home.
