Richard's DIY Brise Soleil: Stylish Passive Cooling with metals4U Materials
When the summer sun began turning his new home into a greenhouse, Richard got creative. With expansive south-facing windows letting in an overwhelming amount of heat, he knew he needed a solution. Still, rather than turning to energy-hungry air conditioning, Richard chose a smarter path: passive cooling.
The Challenge: Overheating from Sunlight
During the height of summer, Richard found his glass-heavy home unbearably hot. Determined to stay comfortable without ramping up electricity bills, he decided to build a brise soleil, a fixed sunshade structure designed to block high-angle summer sun while still welcoming in low-angle winter light.
The Plan: Smart Design Meets Precision Engineering
Richard used an online sun position calculator to determine the perfect width and projection for the brise soleil over each window. This careful planning ensured that the structure would do its job year-round, providing full shade during the summer and allowing for passive solar heating in the colder months.
The Build: A Full DIY Effort
Taking on this project pushed their DIY skills to the limit, from precise measurements to material handling and installation. For the build, Richard used materials supplied by metals4U, chosen for their lightweight, durable, and cost-effective properties. The finished brise soleil features a clean, industrial aesthetic that complements the modern design of their home.
The Results: Dramatic Temperature Reduction
The performance of the brise soleil speaks for itself. On warmer days, Richard measured internal temperatures behind unshaded windows reaching 57°C, while the newly shaded sections stayed at a comfortable 25°C. That's a dramatic difference—achieved entirely without electricity.
