Customer Project Spotlight: Nathan's DIY Patio Dining Table

Why spend £400–£500 on a new patio dining table when you can build your own?

For our latest Customer Project Spotlight, we are featuring a brilliant DIY outdoor dining table built by our customer, Nathan. With a great idea, some DIY spirit, and mild steel cut to size, Nathan created a sturdy patio dining table that looks fantastic and is built to last.

Building a DIY Patio Dining Table from Mild Steel

Rather than buying a ready-made outdoor dining table, Nathan decided to design and fabricate his own.

For the steel frame and components, he used:

• 50 x 50 x 3mm SHS Mild Steel
• 50 x 50 x 3mm RSA Mild Steel
• 3mm Mild Steel Plate

We supplied the mild steel cut to length and ready for the build, helping Nathan get straight into fabricating his new table.

As Nathan put it:

“That just left me to demonstrate my terrible welding skills!” 

Why Use Mild Steel for a DIY Table Frame?

Mild steel is a great choice for DIY furniture projects, especially when you want something strong, durable, and fully customised to your space.

SHS (Square Hollow Section) mild steel is particularly well suited to table frames and other furniture projects. Its square profile makes it easy to create clean, contemporary designs while providing the strength needed for a substantial dining table.

RSA (Rolled Steel Angle) is another versatile option for fabrication projects, while mild steel plate can be cut and used for brackets, mounting points, and other components.

By ordering steel cut to the required dimensions, you can also reduce the amount of cutting and preparation required at home.

One of the biggest advantages of building your own outdoor furniture is having complete control over the finished product.

Instead of being limited to standard sizes and designs available in the shops, a DIY patio dining table can be built around your garden, patio or entertaining area.
