Roger Davies: A Corten Steel Bench Inspired by Leaves in the Wind
Nature has always been one of the greatest sources of inspiration in design, and this beautiful customer project is a perfect example. Combining creativity with durable materials, our customer created a stunning bench formed from leaves blown together by the wind, capturing the movement and organic shapes found in nature.
The Inspiration Behind the Design
The concept behind the bench was simple yet powerful: recreate the natural look of fallen leaves gathering together as the wind moves through a garden. Instead of using traditional straight lines or geometric patterns, the design embraces flowing, irregular leaf shapes, creating a soft, natural aesthetic that blends beautifully into outdoor spaces.
The result is a piece that feels both artistic and functional, a bench that doubles as a sculptural feature in the garden.
Built Using 3 mm Corten Steel
To bring this design to life, the project was crafted using 3mm Corten steel. This material is widely used in outdoor architecture and garden design thanks to its strength and distinctive appearance.
Corten steel develops a protective rust-like patina when exposed to the elements. This natural weathering process not only gives the bench its warm, earthy colour but also helps protect the steel from deeper corrosion, making it ideal for outdoor installations.
Key benefits of using Corten steel include:
- Excellent durability for outdoor environments
- A unique natural rusted finish that evolves over time
- Minimal maintenance required
- Strong yet workable for detailed designs like leaf patterns
A Functional Piece of Garden Art
What makes this bench particularly special is the balance between art and practicality. While the leaf design creates a visually striking piece, the structure remains sturdy and comfortable for everyday use.
Placed in a garden, patio, or landscaped area, the bench naturally complements plants, trees, and other outdoor elements. As the Corten steel continues to weather, it will blend even more with its surroundings, making it feel like part of the landscape itself.
Creative Possibilities with Corten Steel
Projects like this highlight just how versatile Corten steel can be. Whether used for garden features, planters, sculptures, or furniture, it allows designers and makers to create pieces that are both durable and visually unique.
