At metals4U, we get to see all sorts of projects come to life. Some are practical, some are creative, and some go a step further.
Ben's Pedal Paddle Project is one of those.
A challenge with real purpose
Ben set out to raise money for A Leg To Stand On (ALTSO), a charity that provides prosthetic limbs, braces, and wheelchairs to children who need them.
Rather than a standard fundraiser, he decided to take on something far more demanding. The plan was simple on paper, but tough in reality—build a canoe, cross Scotland, and then return on land.
Building the canoe
Ben designed and built his own canoe from scratch. Like most DIY projects, it was not always straightforward. It took time, patience, and a fair bit of problem-solving along the way.
We supplied some of the metal used in the build, and it was great to see it become part of something like this. It is exactly the kind of project our customers take on every day—starting with an idea and working through the details until it becomes something real.
The journey across Scotland
Once the canoe was ready, Ben set off along the Caledonian Canal. It is a serious route, stretching coast to coast through Scotland.
There is a mix of open water, locks, and long stretches that really test your stamina. It is not just physically demanding either. You need to stay focused, adjust to conditions, and keep moving forward even when things do not go to plan.
Not finished yet
Reaching the end of the canal would have been a solid achievement on its own, but Ben was not done there. He made the return journey by land, adding another layer to the challenge.
It says a lot about his mindset. This was never about doing the easy version—it was about seeing it through properly.
£5,100 raised for ALTSO
By the end of the project, Ben had raised more than £5,100.
That money will go towards helping children access essential mobility equipment. It is a practical outcome that will make a real difference.
What this project shows
This project is a good example of what can happen when you combine a clear goal with the willingness to get stuck in.
It also shows how much support matters. Donations, encouragement, and people following the journey all played a part in getting it over the line.
