Why choose Titanium Grade 2?
Grade 2 combines good mechanical strength with excellent ductility, which makes it easier to form and fabricate than many other alloyed titanium grades.
One of its defining characteristics is its outstanding corrosion resistance. When titanium comes into contact with oxygen, it forms a thin and stable protective oxide layer on its surface. This passive layer protects the underlying metal from corrosion, even in demanding environments such as saltwater or aggressive chemical conditions.
Compared with steel, titanium is significantly lighter. With a density of 4.51 g/cm³, it is approximately 45% lighter than carbon steel, while still offering comparable strength in many applications. This strength-to-weight ratio is one of the reasons titanium is specified in sectors where performance and durability matter.
Key Properties of Grade 2 Titanium
Corrosion resistance
Highly resistant to seawater, chlorides and many oxidising acids. It performs particularly well in marine and chemical processing environments.
Lightweight
Density of 4.51 g/cm³. This makes it suitable for applications where reducing weight is important without sacrificing strength.

Weldability
Grade 2 titanium can be welded successfully using TIG welding with appropriate argon shielding. Clean working conditions are essential to avoid contamination during fabrication.
Formability
Offers good ductility compared with higher-strength titanium grades, allowing bending and forming operations where required.
Common Applications
Marine and offshore
Grade 2 titanium is widely used in propeller shafts, rigging components and underwater sensor housings. Its resistance to saltwater corrosion makes it well-suited to long-term exposure in harsh marine conditions.
Chemical processing
Heat exchangers, reaction vessels, pipework and storage tanks are often manufactured from titanium due to its strong resistance to corrosive environments. In many cases, Grade 2 can provide a longer service life than alternative materials.
Medical sector
Due to its biocompatibility and strength, it is used in surgical instruments and certain medical components.
Automotive and performance engineering
Lightweight brackets, exhaust components, and specialist performance parts are often produced from Grade 2 titanium, where weight savings and durability are priorities.
