What is aluminium and what is it used for?
Aluminium is produced from the ore, Bauxite, and is a chemical element (Al). The bauxite is made into alumina powder and is then smelted at a high temperature to produce aluminium metal. Aluminium is the most plentiful metal on earth; it is lightweight, has a low density, is non-toxic, has high thermal and electrical conductivity and does not spark.
Aluminium contains no iron (Fe), so it is not magnetisable, but it is paramagnetic. Aluminium will be weakly attracted to an externally applied magnetic field; however, this will not be maintained once this field is removed; no magnetism will remain.
Properties and uses of Aluminium
It is not only light, strong, corrosion-resistant, ductile, and simple to recycle, but easy to drill, cut, weld, solder, and machine too. With a great strength-to-weight ratio, it is particularly well-suited for use in many engineering applications, including:
- Aircraft
- Marine and train construction
- Engine parts
- Window frames
- Garden structures
- Interior design
- DIY projects

Aluminium can be finished in a variety of ways to improve its appearance and durability; painting and anodising are the most popular finishes.
