Co Ten is a general name for ‘Weathering steel’; a material which forms a stable rust-like appearance after exposure to weather. It was developed as a material that would be resistant to corrosion and that would not need regular maintenance or painting. Cor Ten is a mixture of different kinds of steel (alloy) and has characteristics that are both resistant to corrosion and very strong. The name, Cor Ten, is an abbreviation of “Corrosion” and “Tensile” indicating a material that is resistant to corrosion and which has a high tensile strength (resistance to breaking under tension).
During the weathering process, CorTen’s appearance changes until the surface eventually evolves into an orange, or brown, oxidised, rust-like appearance which is unique and distinctive; this stable surface eliminates the need for painting or weatherproofing as the metal becomes resistant to further weathering, this makes it perfect for low-maintenance applications.
Due to its distinctive finish, CorTen is used in many architectural applications and external cladding for buildings such as ‘Broadcasting Tower’ at Leeds Beckett University. Weathering steel is also popular with artists and sculptors and has been featured in many popular works of art, for example, ‘Tommy’, the CorTen sculpture of a World War One soldier at Seaham Harbour in the north of England and ‘The Angel of the North’ in Gateshead. Some of our customers have also used CorTen within gardening projects when creating retaining walls and fences, edging, planters and raised beds, steps, and fire-pits.
Our CorTen sheet is supplied ‘un-weathered’ and may take several months to reach its stable orange brown finish, therefore, the materials you receive may differ at first from the image shown. The weathering process is accelerated by atmospheric pollutants so the weathering of CorTen may be faster in cities, urban areas and coastal locations than out in the countryside.

    Amazing results

Designed my own sign for my summerhouse using this stuff cut into letters. Thought I'd hang it outside the entrance and I have to say it looks even better than I expected it looks very professional as a whole.

    Weathered CorTen

How weathered will the CorTen sheet be when I receive it?

    • Answer by Kyle on 23/11/2015

The item will arrive without any weathering on it at all. If exposed to the elements and sprayed with water on a regular basis you can speed the weathering process up.

Is it possible to obtain corrugated CorTen?

Yes - but only in 0.80mm thick, otherwise it's really expensive in thicker gauges
