What are RSJ mild steel beams and what are they used for?

RSJs are produced by being rolled from a single piece of structural steel (S355 grade) to maintain structural integrity and are used to support walls and floors when making an opening in a load bearing wall or when building an extension. These steel beams have good machinability, corrosion resistance, and weldability properties.

The steel beam sizes shown are the height in mm (the web) x the width in mm (the flange) x the weight per metre in kilograms, the height and width are measured as if looking at a capital I, hence also being known as I beam. The thickness of the web and flange vary and are shown in individual product descriptions.

The web helps to resists shear forces, whilst the flanges resist the larger part of the bending moment placed on the RSJ. They are also used to make retaining walls in landscape gardening with wooden sleepers placed between them, and to construct the frames of modern office blocks and industrial warehouses.

The RSJs are all produced to BS 4 part 1 BE EN 10025 S355 which is the European Structural Steel standard confirming it has a minimum yield strength (ReH) of 235 MPa at16mm.

Our RSJ  or rolled steel joists, are delivered pre-painted in Red Oxide. Red oxide primer is an anti-corrosion coating to help prevent the formation of rust, ensuring long term durability.

To comply with current building regulations, you will need to get a structural engineer to calculate the loading required for your project, the necessary dimensions, and supply you with a loading certificate. Unfortunately, we are unable to advise on the size required for your project due to the large number of variables in construction design.

Once beams are installed they should have a minimum 30 minutes fire resistance applied either by properly cladding in two or more layers of plasterboard or using intumescent paint; your local building control officer will be able to provide you with advice regarding the most up to date the regulations applicable to your installation.

Delivery of RSJ beams.

RSJ beams are heavy, so all beams we dispatch over 60Kg in weight have to be delivered by a haulier rather than a standard courier service - delivery times are estimated from information we receive from the haulier companies, therefore, we cannot guarantee that any delivery will reach you on a certain date or at a certain time as these oversize deliveries are outsourced. We recommend that you do not organise workmen until your goods have been delivered so that you can avoid any losses.

You will need to make sure off-loading facilities are available on site as they will not be delivered on a vehicle with a Hiab.

Beams less than 60Kg in weight will be delivered by courier and if over 30Kg the delivery driver will need help manually unloading your order.
