Copper properties and uses.
Copper is a pure metal requiring no extraction from an ore. It was the first metal to be cast into shape in a mould around 5000 BCE. It is also a component of various alloys such as brass and bronze and is often added in smaller quantities to aluminium alloys and Corten steel.
It is particularly malleable and ductile and a good conductor of both heat and electricity. It has good corrosion resistance and can be easily hard and soft soldered. Both hot and cold working is possible; cold working increases the hardness and strength of the metal and frequent annealing is required. Due to these properties, Copper is well suited to a wide range of applications such as electric cabling, pipes, electronics, wiring, circuit boards, roofing, fermentation vessels and architectural features. When used on buildings, usually for roofing, its oxidisation forms a green Verdigris or patina, giving a very distinctive and striking effect.
A guide to Copper grades.
Grade C101 is also referred to HC or high conductivity Copper. This is a pure presentation of 99.9% Copper and is well suited to electrical applications due to its high thermal conductivity. This grade has a classification of 100% IACS (International Annealed Copper Standard)
Grade C106 has had the oxygen removed from the metal by the controlled addition of phosphorus during the melting cycle; it has a minimum Copper content of 99.85%. This grade is suitable for all non-electrical applications and those involving welding or brazing during the assembly process.
