Why precious metals and diamond rings disrupt our environment

On average, for every carat that is mined from the ground, up to 250 tons of the earth are removed - alongside 127 gallons of fresh water. Diamond mining is generally seen as an unethical environmental practice and it has been well documented that the mining of diamonds in many countries employs child and slave labour - resulting in so-called ‘blood diamonds’.

These days, many people are opting for moissanite over diamonds as they are viewed as a more ethically viable option for jewellery because they are commonly created in labs and look incredibly similar to the naked, untrained eye.

Gold mining is also seen to be a destructive industry that pollutes waters sources and land nearby with mercury and cyanide, destroying local communities and sometimes lives. Producing gold for one wedding ring alone generates 20 tons of waste.

Why we’re giving you the chance to win a sustainable engagement ring

We wanted to share how such a romantically crafted piece of metal can still be more ethically conscious - and has been skilfully crafted for men to wear. Conventions around men wearing engagement rings are beginning to shift, and although it’s not the cultural norm in UK society, we want to shed light on this industry and how female empowerment challenges the expectations around who 'should’ propose alongside the openness of same-sex couples celebrating their relationships.

Teaming up with Geti rings, we have crafted a stainless steel ring to give away for free instead of putting it on the market. We know the last couple of years have put a lot of financial pressure on those saving for their futures, so we wanted to ease the burden for one lucky couple.

What is the ring made of?

Our ring is sustainable and durable, without compromising on style. Working with Geti rings, we designed the environmentally-conscious ring using stainless steel and a moissanite diamond. The main band is made from stainless steel, a material that allows us to combine both polished and matte textures. Steel is the most recycled metal in the world, and is known for its strength and durability which makes it a great choice for an engagement ring, which will be worn daily.

The outer centre of the ring has an embedded moissanite diamond (a lab-made diamond) to create a simple, timeless piece.

The ring is valued at £650 but since the lucky winner will be getting it for free, you can count that as a saving!
